Blogger Profile: vmac + cheese
We often start the morning in the ONA office by chatting about the latest posts from our favorite bloggers. A new recipe or a handy round-up of online shopping sales from vmac + cheese usually makes the cut: we love the gorgeous (Pinterest-friendly!) and mouth-watering food imagery on Victoria’s site and can relate (unfortunately) to her travails of finding a New York City apartment. We’re also swooning over how she styled the Bolton Street Backpack–how end-of-summer chic!

ONA: How did you get into blogging?
VM: I started my blog in 2008 when I was working as a freelance food writer, and wanted a different venue to write essays and stories about food and the industry. Over time, I got sick of only writing about one topic (it can be a little limiting!), so I decided to expand the focus of my blog to cover design, style, culture, art and a whole lot more. Eventually, the blog grew enough that I was able to leave my regular day job and focus on my blog and a graphic design and consulting business full time!
ONA: What’s your favorite thing to photograph?
VM: Most of the photos I take are all for my blog, and they’re usually still life type shots of recipes I’ve created. I’m really bad about remembering to bring my camera out with me otherwise, but every now and again, I’ll take it along to the park (and definitely on vacations!) just to play around with it.
ONA: How does photography play a role on your blog?
VM: For my original content, it’s major! Having a great, finished shot of a recipe is so important to draw a reader in, and to ensure that the content is sharable across sites like Pinterest. Showcasing what your banana bread looks like is a lot more effective than just telling readers what it looks like (obviously!).
ONA: What camera do you shoot with? What is your “go to” lens of choice?
VM: I’m by no means a pro, so much of my equipment is still beginner status. I use a Canon Rebel XS and normally shoot with a 50mm lens.
ONA: In one sentence, what advice would you give to a blogger just starting out?
VM: Focus first on creating amazing, original, unique content. If you have fantastic content, you can build a following much more easily, because you offer something different, valuable, and inspirational, and people will want to come back every day to see what you’re up to!
ONA: What’s your favorite post on your site and why? [i.e. the best "introduction" to what your site is all about]
VM: Ooh, such a tough question, especially since I talk about so many types of things! I’d say my Friday posts are great at encapsulating what I’m loving in a given week; my round-ups give you a great sense of the types of products I love and my design aesthetic; recipes will tell you all about the flavors I like to cook with at home; and my guest post series (like this one and this one) showcase how much I love supporting the blog community!
ONA: How did you hear about ONA?
VM: Several bloggers have all mentioned (or use!) ONA bags, so when I was able to connect with Christine, learning more about the company was a no-brainer!
